Fine art landscape and abstract painter, landscape artist. My teaching practice specializes in foundational drawing skills and painting for adults.
Education
B.A. Biology and Environmental Studies double major at the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a concentration
in Science Illustration. Graduated in 1997.
Residency
Cubberley Artist Studio Program, a juried studio residency, sponsored by the Palo Alto Arts and Sciences Division City of Palo Alto. 2012-2018
Arts Administration
Arts Focus Co-Chair, Stevenson PACT Elementary, School years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.
Co-chaired a committee that oversees a parent participation arts program at Stevenson Elementary in
Mountain View.
Arts Focus runs a six-week session twice a year. Each session consists of six classes of three hours
each. The program usually uses about 80-100 volunteers for the semester, either staffing the classes, or doing
administration. Two co-chairs lead the program, which duties included volunteer management, recruiting, checking
curriculum, coordinating with teachers, budgeting and purchases, and working with the school to teach to
standards and incorporate the arts into the curriculum.
Curriculum Design and Teaching
Painting Beginning and Beyond, Palo Alto Art Center, Winter and Summer quarters, 2015-present.
Created a class curriculum to teach adult students color theory, composition and painting skills.
Distance Learning:
Transferred Palo Alto Art Center teaching curricula to distance learning within two weeks of shutdown. Courses offered included Nature Sketching and Drawing Skills courses. Spring and Summer, 2020-2021.
Drawing and Painting for children:
An 18-hour drawing class to focus on exploration of drawing and painting processes and materials. Revamped an old curriculum to focus on free exploration and observation. 2018-2019.
Paper Art and Engineering:
Redesigned six-week, 18 hour paper course to shift away from pre-determined craft projects into a process-oriented art exploration class. Created new projects, and streamlined old ones. 2016.
Drawing for Adults:
Created a 9 week course that surveys basic skills. Emphasis is placed on observation and accurate drawing. Students are introduced to proportional drawing, perspective, mass vs. line drawing, ellipses, figure and portrait drawing, and values and shape drawing. Designed for adults. 2016-2018.
Paper Art and Engineering at Stevenson PACT Elementary:
Designed a six week, 18 hour course that explores the artistic and engineering aspects of paper. The course includes units on paper-making, collage, origami, sculpture, pop-up engineering, and book building. The course runs with 24 students of mixed ages- kinder through fifth grade.Assembling your Drawing Toolkit, Fall and Spring quarters, 2015-2016.
Established class and developed curriculum to assist all levels of artists in proportional and realistic drawing.People Drawing Skills, Spring quarter, 2017-2018.
Created a survey class on drawing the nude and clothed model, with lessons on contour, mass and line drawing, value studies, portrait, proportion and accurate and observational drawing.Meet the Media workshop series for the Palo Alto Art Center.
These adult workshops introduce new media to the students. The series includes
encaustics, oil paints, pastels, watercolor, mixed media and collage, and acrylic paints. Each workshop
also offers a skills lesson in addition to a materials experience, such as an exercise in composing paintings,
or creating clean colors. 2016-2017.Daily Painting Practice. Palo Alto Art Center.
This workshop series emphasizes direct, alla prima painting style that yields colorful paintings with a simple
method. The purpose of this workshop is to help students paint early and often, creating paintings in rapid
succession and learning quickly from each painting. Spring and Fall quarters, 2015-2016.Scaling Up Plein Air at the Mendocino Art Center
Workshop focused on painting large in the big outdoors. Designed and implemented the curriculum. Offered Spring 2015 and 2016.Continuing 2 or 3 workshops/quarter at the Palo Alto Art Center. Workshops have included Figure Drawing Dojo and Storytelling through Collage. 2016-2019.
